TweetChat recently caught up with Aaron Kilby, founder and host of #MediaChat. He filled us in on how the chat got started, gave us insight on #MediaChat’s community, and told us how to use TweetChat to build a community.
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I am the Director of Marketing and Business Development at @artisancolour. My experience includes working with national and international marketing teams to help develop and execute large multi-touch marketing campaigns, sales collateral, direct mail programs, retail in-store marketing, creative and print.
Why Twitter and TweetChat?
Twitter is such a powerful platform for people to communicate with each other in real time around the globe. Being able to use a hashtag to bring people together as a group at any given time is just awesome in my book!
TweetChat is a great tool to use during any chat as it aggregates all relevant tweets with a specific hashtag into one direct feed. TweetChat makes it easy to follow, respond, re-tweet and like tweets during a chat.
What is your chat about?
#MediaChat is open to anyone who wants to learn more about social and online media, new apps and anything media related or who has advice or questions on these topics. Our guests have ranged from large brands (McDondald’s Corp, IBM), to apps and tools (oneQube, Nestivity, Scoop.it, Hashtracking) and great thought leaders (Pam Moore, Jessica Northey, Jason Falls, Ted Rubin) just to name a few. #MediaChat is held every Thursday evening at 10pm ET/7pm PT and last for 1 hour.
What inspired the chat?
An old coworker of mine, @houseofbrew was the one who turned me on to TwitterChats and told me the benefits of them. Soon after I had joined my first chat, #GetRealChat and from there I was hooked! I experimented one night trying to start a chat and the first member to join in was @Childhood who brought others into chat with us. From that point we started #MediaChat and in those upcoming weeks it just kept growing into what it is today. It has turned into a passion of mine and at the finish of each chat, I can’t wait for the next one start!
Tells us about your community?
The #MediaChat community is made up like-minded professionals that want to learn and share knowledge on everything media. The support that comes from the members of this group is more than I have seen anywhere else! Everyone is so helpful to each other and we have all built some great relationships both online and off.
Can you share with us one or two success stories from TweetChat?
I would have to say the success is TweetChat itself because at the end of each chat we post the analytics of that chat to our group and TweetChat is always at the top of the list as the most used tool for #MediaChat.
How can TweetChats improve?
Since TweetChats are very time consuming for the moderator to set up each and every week, we are always looking for ways to get new topics and guests, ways to share rich media, ways to get and promote new sponsors and ways to advertise the chat out to new potential followers to grow the community.
How can TweetChats help build your community?
TweetChats are a great way to bring people together for an hour and to share with each other and their followers new things each week. We have new people joining in every week because of a guest or topic that we highlight. We have also had many college students referred to our chat by their teachers as a great way to lean about social media. TweetChats not only build community on Twitter but on other social platforms as well.
Is there anything about TweetChat that you would like to convey that’s not covered by this questionnaire?
Not only is TweetChat a very easy and useful tool for chats but is FREE to use. Can’t get any better than that.
